August Musings 2020

August 29, 2020

In these kinds of blog posts, I talk about what I’ve been up to for the month. The topics may include design work, hobbies, and more. At the end, I include the top five songs I listened to for any fellow music lovers out there.

Portfolio Website

For the whole month of August, I have been redesigning my portfolio website. I wanted a new theme in WordPress that was more customizable. This week, I worked on writing up project descriptions. It took me a long time to research and look at other people’s portfolios to see how they broke down each project. In the end, I have three paragraphs for each portfolio item that sum up the project. Hopefully they are not too long and overwhelming, but the goal was to explain each project well. I also made new mockups for over half of my portfolio items. The redesign was a much needed change to better represent my design projects and skills.

Night Photography at the Cabin

My family went up north to the cabin for a week. When I say up north, I mean northern Wisconsin (not Duluth, Minnesota sadly). My dad and his siblings grew up on a small farm in WI. There is also a family cabin a mile away from the farm. Summer vacations at the cabin and holidays at the farm became a tradition. I recently got a GoPro so for four nights straight, I was up from 9 p.m.-2 a.m. doing photography. It is safe to say my sleep schedule was out of whack for the next week. It was my first time doing night photography ever and using my GoPro to shoot it. The week I was there, the Perseids meteor showers were happening. It was pretty cool to capture the meteor showers! I got some good, continuous photos capturing the movement of the meteor showers. My ultimate goal was to create a star trail photo. I did this by using the Night Time Lapse Photo setting then stacking up the photos in Photoshop. If you want to see other GoPro experiments, particularly video ones, check out my YouTube.

AIGA Expert Series–Rebranding King Arthur

While scrolling on LinkedIn, I saw a link to register for this webinar and immediately signed up. I had seen Little & Company post about their rebranding work with King Arthur and was amazed by it. I wanted to learn more about the design process and ideas behind the rebranding. The two presenters were Ruth Perkins, Senior Creative Director at King Arthur Baking Company, and Mike Schascherer, VP and Creative Director at Little & Company. I did take notes on my iPad, but here’s a link if anyone wants to watch it.
